Download (Save) Tips

Once you have found the information you need, you may read it on your computer screen, print it, or download (save) it to your computer for future use. To save a file from the ICLE's web site to your computer, you will need to follow these basic steps:

1. Create a directory or folder on your computer to hold your downloaded files.
2. Choose the file format - WordPerfect, Word, or PDF - and click on the download link.
3. Save the file to a directory or folder on your computer.

Create a directory or folder to hold your downloaded files

Before you begin to download files, you should create a directory or folder on your computer to hold all the files you will be downloading from ICLE's web site. See "Creating a Folder on Your PC" for step-by-step instructions for doing this.
Choose the file format

Documents on ICLE's web site are often available for download in one of three formats: Word, WordPerfect, or PDF. Note that PDF files require Adobe Acrobat Reader (ICLE recommends version 7 or higher), which is a free software program you may download to your computer. Help downloading Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Save the file to your computer: Instructions for downloading Word or WordPerfect Files

1. To download a file, click on the link to download the document. You'll see a "Save As" prompt. NOTE: If MS Word opens automatically when you click on Word, the file will be temporarily saved in your C:\TEMP directory. Be sure to use the "Save As" command under the File menu to save the file in the "icle" folder or any other folder.

Also, if Word is unable to open the file when you click on the download link, click your right mouse button and you'll see a menu of options. Choose "Save link as" or "Save target as" and continue with these instructions.
2. Write down the file name of the document. You'll need it later when you retrieve it into your word processing program. You can also rename the file if you would like at this time.
3. Choose the folder you created to store downloaded documents and click on OK. To find the folder you created, click on the down arrow in the drop-down box next to the words "Save in:" You'll see a list of folders and drive letters (e.g., "A," "C," "D"). Click on the drive letter where your folder exists, then scroll to the folder and click on it.
4. Your document will now be saved (downloaded) to your computer. It may take from a few seconds to a few minutes to download each document to your computer, depending on the size of the document and the speed of your Internet connection.
5. When you finish downloading all your documents, exit your browser, open your word processing program, and retrieve the documents from the folder. You can edit Word and WordPerfect documents in your word processor and save them in any other folder.

While this question is not fully addressable for such a short article, there are some very effective means you have to keep your own computer under your control, instead of being controlled by someone else. I will start with the more common problems or "exploits" and their cures first. Do not worry if you are not "computer savvy" this article is written in easy engish with little technical jargon. The good news ? Most all of the software used to get the bad guys out of your computer is FREE !

One of the first things to get rid of is tracking cookies. If you have a free email account at yahoo, and you are doing nothing about all those ads you see, you are no doubt being tracked online. Its no different from leaving the house, taking your car around town, just to find out that your "neighbor" was following you when you went to the store, the bank, the post office, and anywhere else you happened to go. This is what tracking cookies do on your computer. They report your activity to web sites you have probably have never heard of ! For this reason, I use ad-aware by Lavasoft®. Its free and can rid your computer of those pesky tracking cookies with ease. I use it constantly. I can not believe people would believe it is okay to put their tracking software on my computer without even asking ! Get the ad-aware soon.

Spyware is a huge problem also, and with halloween coming up soon, it is a reprehensible way to be saying "Trick or treat". According to statistics, spyware infects 80 per cent of all PCs. New versions of spyware in the form of what is called a "trojan" ( So named after the Spartan and Greek battle; once it gets in your computer, it creates havoc. ) are always popping up on the world wide web. How do you fight this greasy little low-life ? Answer : Spybot Search and Destroy. I have used it for a long time. If the ad-aware does not get something, the Spybot Search and Destroy does.
Since I nearly forgot that I have not yet addressed viruses, do not worry, it is because I have not had one in years on any of my computers. If you need to know what a virus is, it is very similar to what a human body gets. Its a malicious little bit of code that either messes with other programs or tries to delete things outright. They are targeted mainly for Microsoft products, which is of course most of all computers in the world. Why do I no longer worry about viruses ? The answer is AVG. It is also free in the personal edition and readily available online. It is good stuff ! I have seen how other anti-virus programs slow down a computer. They are also hard to deal with (operate) personally. AVG has none of those problems. Its a "light" program running in the background and uses very little precious computer resources. It is a cinch to keep it updated and running on your box. When you need a scan, simply open AVG and press the F4 function key. AVG also keeps your emails safe if you use Outlook. All is well.

Malware, adware, and other destructive things with the negative "ware" title are covered above with the Spybot Search and Destroy tool. It really does a lot of good. One other thing, the Ad-aware program will remove a thing called "alexa". Believe it or not, Microsoft includes in their Internet Explorer browser, an application that tracks you and reports your visited sites to a ranking site called alexa .com . Ad-aware will get rid of that for you. Okay , that is all for today. If you implement the things in this article, you will be ahead of most folks online who are getting tracked, zapped, and misused by unscrupulous folk online.

How to Speed Up Dialup Internet Access

Although dialup internet access is often derided as being too slow (especially by high-speed internet providers), there are some ways to speed it up so that it is acceptable for visiting most web sites, reading e-mail, and conducting small downloads. Here are some tips to speed up dialup access...
1. Pay an extra four to six dollars per month for a dialup speed "booster" service, which is offered by some internet service providers. You can read more about these by clicking here and scrolling down to the 2nd paragraph.

2. Use a POP3 (or equivalent) e-mail system and an e-mail client (a program designed specifically for retrieving e-mail messages, such as Microsoft Outlook Express), rather than web-based accounts on services like Yahoo! or MSN. Most dialup internet access providers include accounts of this type with their service at no additional cost; this will speed up your dialup access to e-mail because the client program doesn't have to download or process advertisements and HTML code involved in free e-mail service websites.

3. Upgrade to a faster processor: Although the speed of dialup internet access is limiting, the speed is also affected by the computer's processor (CPU) because it has to decode the HTML or other web site codes before they can be displayed. If you are using a 486 or an early Pentium processor, upgrading to a Pentium II or III will help somewhat; however, relatively little difference will be noticed by upgrading from a Pentium II or III to a Pentium IV. The processor generally won't make much difference in the speed of file downloads, POP3 e-mail access, or viewing text files on the internet. If the computer still has a 14.4, 28.8, or 33.6 kbps modem, upgrading it will also speed up dialup access, but only if a faster connection speed is available in your area (more likely in towns, cities).
4. Use faster web sites: On many web sites it is possible to check the page size (how much code has to be downloaded before they can be viewed by the user) by right-clicking, selecting "Properties" from the menu, and looking at the number after "Size". The higher the number, the longer the web site will take to load. If you make Google.com your home page, the computer has to load about 5800 bytes (takes about 1.75 seconds at 26kbps), whereas Ask.com is approximately 15900 bytes (about 5 seconds) and Dogpile.com about 22400 (almost 7 seconds). This does not include the size of images, but these can be turned off in Internet Options on Internet Explorer. Other factors, like the speed of the server hosting the web site, can affect loading speed as well. Installing a pop up blocker or avoiding websites with pop up advertisements will also make it quicker to access them on dialup.

In addition to these methods to make your dialup connection faster, you can also turn off cookies (however, some web sites - especially those which require registration - will not function without cookies), add more memory to the computer (especially if you like to multi-task), and wait until you are done using the internet to run anti-virus scans.
